Legendary War Chief Of The Lakota People

Perhaps no Native American is more admired for his military acumen than Crazy Horse. Already a proven warrior by the time he was a teenager in the 1850s, his early exploits included stealing horses from the neighboring Crow Indians. During Red Cloud’s War from 1865 to 1868 he planned the December 21, 1866, ambush of a battalion of men from Fort Phil Kearny along the Bozeman Trail in northeastern Wyoming. Crazy Horse personally served as the decoy that trapped the detachment’s commander, Captain William Fetterman, who brashly said, “Give me 80 men and I can ride through the whole Sioux nation.” On that cold December day, Fetterman had 80 troopers under his command—and they were killed to the last man in what was the worst military disaster suffered by the U.S. Army on the Great Plains until the Battle of the Little Bighorn a decade later.
